My Mats & Frames

My images are printed with generous off-white borders and I generally cut my mat windows large enough to reveal approximately one-half inch of border all around the image.  Thus, contact with and cropping of the image edges by the mat is prevented, and space is provided in the border area to accomodate a signature.

If  I mat your print, only conservation materials and methods are employed.  Backing boards, overmats, adhesives, etc. ... anything which can contribute to the aging of your print ... are always premium, acid-free, archival materials.  All positioning and mounting of the print is reversible, so that if for any reason disassembly is necessary or desired, it can be accomplished by a knowledgeable framer without damage to the artwork.

I have always felt that the mat can be and should be an integral part of the artistic presentation of an image.  In keeping with that belief, I strongly prefer to use color coordinated mats to achieve visual impact rather than take a more conventional and non-committal approach of surrounding every photograph with a neutral off-white mat.  In particular, the soft finish of suede fabric mats provides a striking complement to glossy photographs.  Now that the suede mat lines of both Crescent and Bainbridge, the two largest mat producers, are 100 percent archival, I have begun to use them in a great majority of my matted work.

I use only solid wood frames with simple lines and furniture grade finishes.  Frame weight and cross-section required depends somewhat on the size of your print, and will determine which specific frames are appropriate.  Finishes include oak, ash, walnut, cherry, or mahogany, and occasionally gold or silver.  Frames are selected to be most complementary to the matted image.  That being said,  if you have a special preference,  please let me know.
